Bus, train, plane. There are many ways to travel to and from the Monterey Bay area.

Whether you’re going home for break, embarking on a study abroad experience, or heading on a West Coast adventure, here are a few travel options for you.

Transportation Options and Transit Hubs

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes through the Salinas Train Station (MYU) daily. This West Coast line runs between Los Angeles and Seattle with stops in between at places such as: 

  • Santa Barbara
  • San Jose
  • San Francisco Bay Area
  • Sacramento
  • Portland, Oregon

Explore current schedules at the Amtrak website and use the station code MYU. You can even include a bus connection right from campus.

You can take MST lines to connect to other transit providers. Note that your Otter ID will only cover fares on MST buses. 

Watsonville/Santa Cruz

Take MST Line 28 or 29 to Watsonville Transit Center, where you can then transfer to Santa Cruz METRO buses. View routes and schedules.

Gilroy/San Jose - Weekdays Only

Take MST Line 59 to Gilroy Transit Center, where you can then transfer to Valley Transportation Authority buses to get to San Jose and beyond. View routes and schedules.

MST Line 23 travels from the Salinas Transit Center as far south as King City, with stops in Gonzales, Soledad, and Greenfield along the way. 

MST Line 84 connects with Line 23 and allows riders to transfer for free. Line 84 travels as far south as Paso Robles, where you can find other transit options using San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority.

Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) is the closest local airport in Monterey County and provides airline connections to several international airports, including:

  • Burbank, CA
  • Dallas, TX
  • Denver, CO
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Orange County, CA
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • San Diego, CA
  • San Francisco, CA
  • Seattle, CA

Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) is the closest international airport to Cal State Monterey Bay; traffic permitting, it’s approximately a one-hour drive.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about an hour and 40 minutes from campus. 

Groome Transportation Monterey Bay offers daily bus service to the San Jose and San Francisco airports. Reserve your trip and get easy pick-up and drop-off at the Otter Student Union.
