FY16-17 ARI System-wide Pre-Proposal OPM submission deadline is August 24, 2015

OVERVIEW

The Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) exemplifies the California State University System (CSU) working for California through university-industry partnerships. ARI provides a diversified, multi-campus applied research program that annually matches $4.37 million in State General Funds with at least one-to-one external support for research on high-priority issues facing California agriculture. The ARI engages the collective expertise of the CSU’s four colleges of agriculture at California State University, Fresno; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; and CSU, Chico along with Cal State Monterey Bay and Humboldt State collaboratively with faculty and research scientists from other CSU and University of California (UC) campuses, the USDA, and other State, Regional and Federal organizations. ARI’s research and technology transfer activities complement the basic research conducted by the nation’s land grant universities and aim to improve the economic viability and sustainability of California agriculture.

ELIGIBILITY

Project Directors for ARI projects must be faculty or research scientists from the member or associate campus (CSU Monterey Bay and Humboldt State University) which receives the ARI allocation. For System projects, Project Directors may be faculty or research scientists from member or associate campuses. If from an associate campus, Project Directors must collaborate with member campus personnel.

WRPI faculty research incentive award program

Water Resources and Policy Initiatives (WRPI) is requesting applications for assigned time funding for the 2015-2016 academic year. The purpose of the WRPI Faculty Research Incentive Award Program is to stimulate CSU faculty members to develop and submit full proposals to external funding agencies and organizations for water-related research and educational projects.

Applications to develop full proposals on any fundable topic are eligible, provided they seek to advance or promulgate knowledge of California’s water-related issues and the processes that affect them. In accepting an award, a Principal Investigator (PI) commits to develop and submit a full proposal for external funding through their host campus research office.

ELIGIBILITY

All CSUMB assistant, associate and full professors are eligible to apply.

Applications from single PIs are permitted, but collaborative applications involving faculty from multiple CSU campuses that promote interdisciplinary, integrative research and/or educational initiatives and that include regional and disciplinary diversity are preferred. Applications seeking assigned time funding to develop new, previously un-submitted full proposals for external funding that are consistent with the WRPI Strategic Plan shall be highly considered. Applications seeking assigned time to revise and re-submit existing proposals (not previously funded) for external funding will be considered as well with appropriate justification.

SUPPORT PROVIDED

WRPI anticipates making multiple awards for the 2015-2016 academic year, contingent upon continued funding. This document serves as the RFA for Fall 2015 semesters and quarters, Spring 2016 semesters, or for Winter 2016 and Spring 2016 quarters. Assigned time funding is provided based on the system-wide Minimum Annual Rate for Assistant Professor/Lecturer B. At present, this rate is $1,716 per semester weighted teaching unit (WTU) and $1,144 per quarter WTU. Benefits are not included. Funds will be transferred to the award recipient’s College through a Cash Posting Order (CPO) and managed by the respective Dean. Office Awards are not subject to campus indirect costs (facilities and administrative fees[1]) or any other type of fees from any source.

Faculty support grant objectives

Faculty Support Grants for the Engagement of Students In Coursework Related Research, developed by the CSUMB Academic Senate for Postgraduate Studies & Research is a competition for awards funded by the new CSU Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity allocation approved by Chancellor White. CSUMB’s allocation from the Chancellor’s Office is $39,256 out of $2.4 Million for 23 campuses and based on faculty FTE. There will be 7 CSUMB awards of up to $5,600 each.

The grants are intended to support these baseline goals:

• promote the development of new, expanded or enhanced creative activities,research, scholarship, creative activity and demonstration projects by faculty;
• encourage publication and other forms of scholarly dissemination;
• stimulate scholarship which may generate future funding from other sources;
• foster student participation in faculty mentored research projects;
• help junior faculty meet the qualifications for tenure and promotion.

In addition, this year, these grants should focus on supporting changes in coursework that accomplish the following:

• engage students in the research process or creative activity;
• afford opportunities for students to participate in and learn about the conduct of research including theories guiding the research, methods, processes, and analyzing, interpreting and communicating results;
• integrate the research project into course curricula (or piloting such integration) with the intent to continue the approach after grant funding has ended;
• or, contribute significantly to the relevant field(s) of study or practice, to the University, and/or to the Tri-County community Eligibility.

Eligiblity

These awards are limited to Tenured-Track and Tenured Faculty only. Grantees who have failed to file the required final reports for prior CSUMB FRSCA or FIG award(s) or who have an active FIG award are not eligible.

Faculty incentive grant objectives

The Faculty Incentive Grants (FIG) program was established to assist pre-tenured Assistant Professors and pre-tenured Associate Professors with initiating research, scholarly, and creative activities that have the potential to become continuing programs supported by extramural funds. Funding is provided by the return of indirect costs from externally funded projects to the University Corporation at Monterey Bay and the Provost. This year a total of $50,000 is available for awards.

The Academic Senate Committee for Postgraduate Studies and Research (PGSR) is committed to fostering a supportive environment for entry-level faculty starting out their research, scholarly, and/or creative activity career at CSUMB. The Committee reviews proposals and recommends awards. At the discretion of the Committee, awards may be for less than requested in the proposal.

Eligibility

Eligibility Eligibility for this program is limited to pre-tenured Assistant Professors and pre-tenured Associate Professors only at CSUMB. Faculty must not have received FIG funding from the previous two years (2013 & 2014). Recipients of CSUMB Faculty Support Grants must describe in section "VII. Other Information" how the FIG proposed project is significantly different than the awarded FSG.
