Required Training

To support research compliance requirements, CSUMB subscribes to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) on-line training program. Any researcher affiliated with CSUMB may complete CITI Program training. CITI training is widely recognized professionally for exceeding minimum standards of training in research ethics. Courses include:

  • Human Subjects Research (IRB)
  • Animal Care & Use (IACUC)
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
  • Biosafety/Biohazard
  • Information Privacy Security (HIPPA)
  • Conflict of Interest (COI) - for federal funds ONLY
  • Export Control
  • Good Laboratory Practice

Additionally, the CSU Chancellor’s Office has published several research compliance related courses via CSU Learn. Courses include:

  • Research Security Training – for federal funds
  • IBC Training

Conflict of Interest (COI)

Personnel on proposals to DOD, DOE, NASA, NIH, NSF, and USDA must complete COI training when completing their Outside Interests disclosure form via Cayuse. COI training is valid for 4 years and offered via CITI Program. For private funding that is reported via the 700U form, you will be assigned required state training directly from CSUMB Human Resources.

Human Subjects Research (IRB)

The IRB will require all study personnel to have completed HSR training prior to approval. HSR training is valid for 3 years and offered via CITI Program. The HSR course will require that you complete all the required modules to obtain a training certification. There are additional modules you can take as they may apply to your research. You may be asked by the IRB to complete additional modules in CITI commensurate with your protocol.

Animal Care & Use (IACUC)

The IACUC will require all study personnel to have completed ACU training prior to approval. ACU training is valid for 3 years and offered via CITI Program. All researchers, instructors, students and staff who work with animals must understand the key principles, policies, and responsibilities that are involved with animal-related research and teaching. At its discretion, the IACUC may require additional online or hands-on training, depending on the project.

Biosafety Training (IBC)

The IBC will require all study personnel to have completed Biosafety training prior to approval. Biosafety training is valid for 3 years and offered via CSU Learn. The IBC will also accept completion of the CITI course Biosafety/Biosecurity: Initial Biosafety Training (which includes 14 modules).

Research Security training (RST)

Personnel on proposals to DOD, DOE, NASA, NIH, NSF, and USDA must complete Research Security training every 12 months. To comply with federal requirements under the CHIPS and Science Act and NSPM-33, the CSU system had adapted the Federal Research Security Training (SECURE Center Consolidated Module) created by NSF into a CSU Learn module. Following this training, any international relationships should be disclosed via Cayuse Outside Interests disclosure form.

Responsible & Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR)

Personnel on proposals to DOD, DOE, NASA, NIH, NSF, and USDA must complete RCR training. Training completion certificates are valid for 3 years unless otherwise specified and often via CITI Program. Training via CITI is minimally required. In addition to CITI, researchers may also review content provided by the US DHHS Office of Research Integrity (ORI).
