Content Type Guidelines
Choose the right content type
Use content types to build clear, consistent pages in Terminalfour. Choose the type that best fits the information you need to share, then keep each section focused and easy to scan.
A basic page will include Hero Header, General Content with Navigation, and then additional components as needed.
CSUMB 2024 Content Types
Use CSUMB 2024 - Hero Header Section to introduce a page with a prominent heading, image and optional button. Add a button only when it leads to a useful next step. If you add button text, select one link. The image is cropped automatically; Images are recommended but not required.
Best for: Introducing a page with a clear title, an optional image and an optional button that leads to a useful next step.
How to use it: Place the hero at the beginning of the page. Enter a descriptive page title. Add an image if it supports the page’s purpose, and include a button when readers have a clear action to take. Make sure to include descriptive, relevant metadata and meta keywords for search engines to find your page.
Watch for: If you enter button text, select either an internal or external link destination.
Example:
Use CSUMB 2024 - General Content with Navigation on child pages. It provides the main page content and automatically displays left-side navigation based on the page’s place in the site structure, including related parent, sibling and child pages. Most pages are child pages, so this content type is the standard choice for most pages. Editors do not edit the navigation directly; it comes from the site structure.
Best for: Providing the main content on a typical child page while displaying related website navigation.
How to use it: Use this as the main content area for most pages. Organize information with descriptive headings, short paragraphs and lists. Navigation appears automatically based on the page’s location in the site structure.
Watch for: Editors do not edit the navigation within this content type. If a navigation item is missing or incorrect, contact Web Services for assistance.
Example:
Use CSUMB 2024 - General Content - Full Width for sections that need more horizontal space. Add it after the required CSUMB 2024 - General Content with Navigation content type.
Best for: Adding a section that needs more horizontal space below the main content.
How to use it: Add this after the required General Content with Navigation content type. Give the section a descriptive heading and organize its content so readers can quickly find what they need.
Watch for: Full width does not replace the required General Content with Navigation content type.
Example:
Use CSUMB 2024 - Promo Component for important or time-sensitive announcements that should appear for a limited time. Remove or update the promo when the announcement is no longer relevant so it doesn’t become a permanent page feature.
Best for: Highlighting an important or time-sensitive announcement for a limited period.
How to use it: Write a short message explaining the announcement and any relevant deadline. If a link is included, use descriptive text that tells readers what they can do next. Plan who will update or remove the promo when the announcement is no longer relevant.
Watch for: Outdated announcements can confuse readers. Include specific dates when helpful, and remove or update the promo promptly. Keep permanent instructions in the page’s main content.
Example: A reminder that scholarship applications close soon, with a link to application instructions.
Use CSUMB 2024 - Listing Section to present related pages, programs, resources or other items in a row-based format. Each listing is a separate content item. Add the section title to the first item in a group; leave it blank on the remaining items. If you add link text, select one link. Images are recommended but not required.
Best for: Presenting a group of related pages, services or resources in a consistent row-based format.
How to use it: Create a separate content item for each listing. Enter the section title on the first item in the group and leave it blank on the remaining items. Give each listing a clear title, a concise description and an optional image or link.
Watch for: Keep related listing items together in the content order. Avoid repeating the section title on every item. Images are recommended but optional. If you enter link text, select either an internal or external link destination.
Example: A “Student Resources” section with separate listings for academic advising, tutoring and career development.
Use CSUMB 2024 - Accordion when readers may want to open and review individual topics, such as answers to common questions. Each accordion item is separate. Add a section title or description to the first item to introduce the group; later items do not need to repeat them. Keep each heading specific so readers can find the information they need.
Best for: Organizing related topics that readers can open individually, such as frequently asked questions or information for different audiences.
How to use it: Create a separate content item for each accordion topic. Add a section title or introduction to the first item if needed. Give each item a specific heading that explains what readers will find inside, and keep related items together in the content order.
Watch for: Avoid vague headings such as “More information.” Keep essential deadlines, required actions and urgent information visible in the main page content. Do not repeat the group title or introduction on every item.
Example: An advising FAQ with separate items for scheduling an appointment, preparing for a meeting and changing a major.
Use CSUMB 2024 - Profile to feature selected staff or faculty profiles. Choose profiles from the site structure using Add section link. Add a call-to-action link only when it gives readers a useful next step; if you enter link text, select one link.
Best for: Featuring selected faculty or staff members using their existing profile pages.
How to use it: Choose the profiles to display from the site structure using “Add section link.” Add introductory text or a call-to-action link when it helps readers understand the group or take a useful next step.
Watch for: Select the person’s profile section rather than an unrelated department page. Check that the linked profile information is current. If you enter call-to-action link text, select either an internal or external link destination.
Example: A “Meet Our Team” section featuring a department chair and staff members.
Use CSUMB 2024 - Contact Section to make contact information easy to find. The third card is optional and appears only when it has a title. Optional buttons appear only when button text is provided; for each button or link text, select one link.
Best for: Making office or department contact information easy to find.
How to use it: Organize contact details into clearly titled cards. Add a third card only when you have another useful category of information. Include buttons when they help readers take an action, such as scheduling an appointment or finding directions.
Watch for: The third card appears only when it has a title. Optional buttons appear only when button text is provided; pair each with one link destination. Test contact links and keep office locations, hours and phone numbers current.
Example: A “Contact Academic Advising” section with an email address, phone number, office location and office hours.
