Through a blend of flexible online coursework and in-person experiences, you’ll build the skills to lead interdisciplinary teams, apply data to real-world challenges, and advocate for equitable, high-quality care. You won’t just study leadership—you’ll practice it through hands-on clinical experiences, mentorship and a capstone project that addresses a real healthcare need.

  • Want to strengthen skills in clinical decision-making, data-informed practice and team leadership
  • Are interested in improving patient outcomes and advancing health equity in their communities
  • Plan to pursue future education, such as a nurse practitioner program or doctoral degree
  • Hold a BSN — or an ADN with a bachelor’s degree in another field — and are prepared for graduate-level study

Whether advancing in current roles or exploring new opportunities, students in this program build the knowledge and experience needed to lead in today’s evolving healthcare environment.

The Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Leadership curriculum builds advanced skills in leadership, clinical inquiry and systems-level thinking. Coursework is designed to help nurses apply evidence-based practice, lead teams and improve outcomes across healthcare settings.

Key areas of study include:

  • Leadership and organizational systems to guide teams and manage complex healthcare environments
  • Clinical inquiry and evidence-based practice to analyze data and improve patient care
  • Quality improvement and patient safety using proven frameworks and real-world applications
  • Health informatics and technology to support care coordination and decision-making
  • Healthcare policy, economics and ethics to address challenges and advance equitable care
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration and change management to drive innovation across systems

Students also complete a leadership practicum and a capstone project, applying their learning to a real healthcare challenge in their workplace or community.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Leadership are prepared to take on advanced roles across healthcare, education and community settings. The program builds the leadership, analytical and communication skills needed to guide teams, improve systems and influence patient care.

Career pathways include:

  • Nursing leadership and management roles such as charge nurse, nurse manager or healthcare administrator
  • Care coordination and case management positions that improve patient experiences and outcomes
  • Clinical education roles in community college nursing programs or as clinical faculty

Graduates are also well prepared to continue their education through post-master’s nurse practitioner programs or doctoral study, including Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Ph.D. pathways.

The Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Leadership is designed for registered nurses who are prepared for graduate-level study and leadership development.

To apply, applicants must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A valid California RN license
  • Two professional letters of recommendation demonstrating readiness for graduate study and leadership roles
  • A statement of purpose outlining career goals and interest in the program

Preferred qualification:

  • At least one year of professional nursing experience

Applicants with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and a bachelor’s degree in another field are also eligible to apply.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Leadership develop advanced knowledge and practical skills to lead change, improve patient outcomes and strengthen healthcare systems across diverse settings.

Through a combination of coursework, clinical experience and applied learning, the program prepares nurses to:

  • Analyze, interpret and apply data to support evidence-based practice and drive improvements in patient care and organizational performance
  • Lead interdisciplinary teams with confidence, fostering collaboration, accountability and a culture of quality and patient safety
  • Apply ethical decision-making, critical thinking and systems-level perspectives to address complex healthcare challenges
  • Advocate for patients and communities by promoting equitable access to care and working to reduce health disparities
  • Navigate healthcare systems, policy and emerging technologies to improve coordination, efficiency and outcomes
  • Integrate leadership, clinical expertise and hands-on experience to design and implement meaningful solutions in real-world settings

These objectives align with national standards for advanced nursing education and prepare graduates to take on expanded leadership roles or pursue further doctoral study.

The Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Leadership is a 32-unit program designed to be completed in as few as 16 months. Coursework builds progressively from foundational knowledge to advanced leadership practice, integrating theory, application and real-world experience.

Students complete a sequence of required courses that include:

  • Foundations of graduate nursing and scholarly writing
  • Nursing theory and advanced clinical inquiry
  • Health informatics and emerging technologies
  • Organizational systems, finance and leadership
  • Quality improvement and patient safety
  • Healthcare policy, economics and social issues
  • Advanced leadership and collaborative change

In addition to coursework, students complete:

  • A leadership practicum, working with a nurse leader mentor in a healthcare setting
  • 500 clinical hours through direct and indirect experiences
  • A capstone project focused on a real-world quality improvement initiative in a healthcare organization

All courses are required and designed to build the skills needed to lead teams, improve systems and drive meaningful change in healthcare.

The Master of Science in Nursing in Clinical Leadership at Cal State Monterey Bay reflects a strong commitment to regional stewardship, equity and community impact. The program prepares nurse leaders who contribute to stronger, more responsive healthcare systems across California’s Central Coast.

As the first locally based MSN program serving the region, it expands access to graduate education for working nurses while helping address critical workforce needs. Graduates are prepared to:
