Department of Applied Environmental Science

Preparing students to support biodiversity, sustainability, and justice in a changing world.

Grounded in Science, Driven by Stewardship

The Department of Applied Environmental Science at CSUMB prepares students to address today’s environmental challenges through science, policy, and community engagement. Our programs focus on urban and wild landscapes, rivers, watershed science, terrestrial and freshwater ecology, and natural resource management.

We emphasize interdisciplinary, place-based learning that integrates environmental stewardship and social justice. Students benefit from small class sizes, project-based coursework, and close faculty mentorship, equipping them with the skills and experiences they need for meaningful careers or graduate study.

Academic Pathways with Practical Focus

Our undergraduate and graduate programs are designed to equip students with real-world skills and interdisciplinary knowledge. Each pathway offers a unique focus, grounded in applied learning and career readiness.

“I made lifelong friends with my professors and my classmates. Having small classroom sizes and being able to talk to anybody around me has allowed me to develop into a better learner. Those hands-on opportunities are there, and I don’t think you can get that anywhere else. CSUMB was the best place for me to get this experience.”

— Destiny Ciara Yano, Applied Environmental Science Student

Career-Ready Graduates with Proven Outcomes

AES alumni consistently succeed in careers and graduate education. Of the 1,316 alumni tracked, 82% are working in fields related to their degree, and 35% have earned advanced degrees. Graduates pursue roles in natural resource management, environmental consulting, education, sustainability, and government at all levels. Many move into leadership positions and help hire the next generation of CSUMB graduates.

Community Engagement Through Coursework

AES students apply their knowledge in real-world contexts through collaborative initiatives. Programs like the Sustainable City Year Program and the Habitat Stewardship Project enable students to work on environmental restoration, education, and sustainability with local partners, developing both professional skills and community impact.
