Supporting People, Families, and Communities
The Human Development and Family Science degree program prepares students to understand human growth and strengthen family well-being in diverse communities. Courses connect theory with practice through service learning placements, applied research, and a senior capstone project.
Graduates are ready for careers in education, counseling, human services, and community programs, or to continue advanced study in fields such as social work and education.
Where Learning Meets Practice
The Human Development and Family Science program is built around the idea that learning happens best when it’s applied and connected to the real world. In every stage of the program, you’ll link theory with practice — whether through service learning placements, applied projects, or community partnerships. This approach prepares you with the skills, experiences, and confidence to support individuals and families in meaningful ways.
Service Learning
From your first semester, you’ll step into placements with local schools, nonprofits, and community agencies. These experiences let you work directly with children, youth, and families while applying concepts learned in the classroom. Service learning helps you build confidence, develop professional skills, and make a positive impact on the community.
Certificates
You can strengthen your degree through the Certificate in Family Intervention. The certificate documents specialized preparation for helping families navigate challenges. It adds depth to the degree and sets graduates apart for employers or graduate schools.
Career Outcomes
A degree in Human Development and Family Science prepares you for careers that focus on supporting individuals, families, and communities. Our alumni work in education and youth services, such as early childhood centers, after-school programs, and youth development organizations. Others enter human services and counseling, taking on roles in case management, child welfare, or family intervention. Graduates also contribute to health and community programs, designing initiatives in nonprofits, advocacy groups, and public health.
For those who wish to continue their education, the program provides a strong foundation for graduate study in fields such as social work, counseling, and education. Whether stepping directly into professional roles or pursuing advanced degrees, our graduates leave with applied experience, research skills, and community connections that prepare them to make a lasting impact.
