Meet the Dean

Dr. Karen S. Myers-Bowman is a family scientist and Certified Family Life Educator with deep expertise in family life education, parent-child communication and culturally responsive teaching. She is dedicated to preparing educators who serve learners across diverse backgrounds, abilities and communities.

She brings over two decades of academic and leadership experience, including roles at San Diego State University (SDSU), where she served as interim dean of SDSU Global Campus, senior associate dean of the College of Education, and chair of Child and Family Development. Prior to SDSU, she served on the faculty at Kansas State University and North Dakota State University.

Dr. Myers-Bowman holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Child Development and Family Studies from Purdue University and a B.A. in Psychology from Manchester College. Her published works have appeared in Family Relations, Child Welfare, Journal of Family Theory and Review, and other peer-reviewed journals.

Originally from Elgin, Illinois, she and her husband, Clay, have two adult sons, a granddaughter and have hosted 10 international exchange students over the years.
