Signature Events

Every year, the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences sponsors several Signature Events that enrich the arts and culture scene at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Jazz Festival

Aside from the dozens of productions, exhibitions, performances, and cultural events on campus during any given week, the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is known for a few special gatherings and programs.

We call them our Signature Events, and they’re a big part of how we connect and engage with the CSUMB and broader community.

Monterey Jazz Festival Partnership

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin plays at the Monterey Jazz Festival

We have one of the world’s longest-running, most renowned jazz festivals right in our backyard. Founded in 1958, Monterey Jazz celebrates America’s creativity and cultural heritage by presenting legendary jazz musicians, composers and rising stars — and our students have a chance to become immersed in the experience.

Since 2018, Cal State Monterey Bay has partnered with this premier organization to offer master classes, performances, internship opportunities and more. Each year, we issue more than 100 free student tickets to this annual fall festival.

Sugar Skulls

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

The annual Día de los Muertos Celebration and Sugar Skull Workshop introduces students to traditional art, such as altar construction and flower arch preparation. This lively and colorful event draws up to 300 participants of all ages each fall.

Social Justice Colloquium

For nearly two decades, this event has brought thought leaders onto campus to engage with students, staff, faculty and the local community. A full schedule of panels, workshops and keynotes explores social justice issues of our time.

Visiting Artist Series

Each year we welcome emerging and established figures in contemporary art and culture to visit campus. During mini-residencies, artists and scholars showcase their work, give public lectures, and visit campus studios to provide 1:1 feedback to students.

Woman through poetry

Writers from the Edge

This annual series brings young contemporary authors to campus to discuss their creative work and offer their perspectives on some of the most pressing national and global issues of our time.
