Understand Your Academic Standing

Select the section that matches your current academic standing.

What this means

  • Your cumulative GPA is below the required minimum.
  • You remain eligible to enroll in classes.
  • You were notified of this status through your CSUMB email.

What you are required to do

  • Complete the Otter Academic Success course in Canvas.
  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to review your Learning Plan.
  • Meet with a Success Advisor to complete the GPA Calculation Form.
  • Attend three tutoring sessions with the Cooperative Learning Center or Mathematics and Statistics Cafe
  • Improve your GPA to return to good academic standing.

If your GPA does not improve

  • You may remain on probation or become subject to disqualification.

What this means

  • Your enrollment at the University has been paused due to academic standing.
  • You are not eligible to register for courses for the upcoming term.
  • You will receive official notification through your CSUMB email, including information about your options.

What this may affect

  • Financial aid eligibility (see Section 6.00 in the Financial Aid and SAP Policy)
  • Housing and access to certain student services
  • Veteran or military-connected educational benefits

Second baccalaureate and graduate students are evaluated under different GPA standards. Refer to Section 5.30 of the Academic Standing Policy for full details.

Next Steps

  • Review reinstatement eligibility requirements.
  • Meet with an advisor to discuss your learning plan.
  • Submit a reinstatement petition by the published deadline.

Submit an Appeal (Undergraduate Students)

If you were recently disqualified, you may be eligible to submit an appeal for immediate reinstatement.

Appeals are typically considered when:

  • Extenuating circumstances contributed to your academic performance, and
  • You have worked with a Success Advisor to develop a plan for improvement.

Log in to your Reinstatement Appeal Canvas course to review instructions, complete requirements, and submit your appeal.

You are required to meet with both your Academic Advisor and Success Advisor as part of the appeal process.

Appeals must be complete and submitted by the stated deadline. Late appeals will not be accepted.

Return After a Break in Enrollment

If you do not submit an appeal, or if your appeal is not approved:

  • Reapply to CSUMB through the Office of Admissions.
  • Meet any additional reinstatement and readmission criteria.

Apply as a Returning Student
For full details, refer to Section 5.30 of the Academic Standing Policy.

Does academic probation affect financial aid?

Academic standing and financial aid eligibility are reviewed separately. You can be on academic probation and remain eligible for financial aid, or you may lose financial aid eligibility while in good academic standing.

For financial aid requirements, review Section 6.00 of the Financial Aid and SAP policy or contact the Financial Aid Office.

Will academic probation or disqualification appear on my transcript?

Academic standing is recorded on your transcript at the end of each term.

Can I change my major while on academic probation?

Students on academic probation may be eligible to change majors, depending on academic standing and program requirements. Meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss your options.

Can I take summer courses to improve my GPA?

Summer enrollment may be an option to improve your GPA. Meet with an Academic Advisor to determine whether this is appropriate for your situation.

What happens if I do not submit an appeal after disqualification?

If you do not submit an appeal, or if your appeal is not approved, you will not be eligible to enroll. You may be eligible to return after completing a required break in enrollment and meeting reinstatement criteria through the Office of Admissions.

Can I enroll in classes at CSUMB if I am disqualified?

If you are academically disqualified, you cannot enroll in courses as a degree-seeking student.

However, you may be able to take courses at CSUMB through CSU Open University. Open University enrollment allows you to take classes, but you will not be officially readmitted to your degree program while disqualified.

Some students also choose to take courses at another college or university during their break in enrollment.
