Institutional Surveys

Supporting campus assessment through institutional surveys by collecting and sharing insights on student and faculty experiences, and by providing accessible reports, dashboards and consultation to inform evaluation, planning and improvement.

IAR supports assessment, planning, and improvement by collecting and sharing campus-wide survey data on student and faculty experiences. These surveys provide valuable insights that help the university evaluate academic effectiveness, understand engagement and outcomes and inform data-informed decision-making.

To support use of survey data, IAR offers tools and resources such as a survey calendar, question index and guidance on survey timing and burden, along with dashboards and reports to explore the results.

Surveys

The Alumni Curriculum Survey is a periodic survey of recent CSUMB undergraduate and graduate alumni that gathers their feedback on their academic experiences, including satisfaction with their major, preparation for post-graduation goals and skills such as critical thinking. Results include both quantitative reports and qualitative insights that help the university understand how well the curriculum supports alumni outcomes and informs future academic planning.

For results from the Fall 2023 Alumni Curriculum Survey, submit and Online Data Request.

The Course Modality and Units Survey provides degree-seeking undergraduate students with the opportunity to tell faculty and administrators about their preferences in terms of instructional modalities and unit loads: what courses they wish to take, by which modality, and how they would ideally distribute their units across instructional modalities. This survey helps CSUMB provide course options to students in planning schedules for upcoming semesters.

For results from the Fall 2024 Course Modality Survey, login to Campus Data Warehouse via the CSUMB dashboard or Okta dashboard.

The Experience Survey is a periodic survey of all currently enrolled degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students that provides students with the opportunity to tell faculty and administrators about their experience with various aspects of Cal State University Monterey Bay. Results of the survey are used to evaluate and improve the academic and non-academic offerings of the university.

Students' responses from previous CSUMB Experience Surveys have led to many improvements, including:

  • Major requirements streamlined for all students
  • Degree pathways clarified for all students
  • Academic Advising centralized
  • FYS realigned with GE curriculum, so that students who take FYS are also earning GE credits
  • GE curriculum revised
  • Language requirements reduced by 1 semester (for all students subject to language requirement)
  • Transfer students in high-unit majors exempted from the language requirement

Results from the Spring 2025 CSUMB Experience Survey will be available in Campus Data Warehouse in March 2026.

The NSSE is a nationwide survey of first-year and senior undergraduates that measures how actively students engage in educational practices linked with learning, development and success, providing institutions with comparative data and insights to inform assessment and improvement of the undergraduate experience.

For results from the Spring 2023 NSSE, submit an Online Data Request.

The FSSE is a survey that gathers faculty perceptions about how students engage in educational practices and how faculty contribute to and support student learning, complementing student-focused engagement data like the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). It helps institutions understand instructional staff expectations and experiences related to student engagement to inform discussions about teaching, learning and undergraduate education.

IAR's Survey Question Index is an interactive Tableau tool that lets users browse and explore all survey questions from IAR’s institutional surveys in one place, helping faculty and staff quickly find specific questions that have been asked across our surveys with metadata on the survey administration year and population surveyed.

In an effort to gauge student survey burden, IAR asks university department heads about their survey plans each Fall and Spring.

Survey Burden is the aggregate number of questions asked, weighted by the survey sample size.
