Dean's Message - May 2024

Hello Everyone,

Thank you to all the students, faculty, and staff who welcomed newly admitted students to campus last month at two Admitted Otter Days on Saturday, April 6th, for incoming freshmen, and April 27th, for incoming transfer students. Between the two events, CSUMB hosted thousands of visitors, including admitted students, families, friends, and supporters. We can't wait to see these students join the raft this fall.

I would also like to thank everyone who made the 22nd Annual Ethics and Responsible Business Forum possible on April 18th. From the organizing committee, led by Dr. Caleb Bernacchio, to the participants, including our own Jeff Froshman, who served as moderator, the event was a dynamic and engaging experience. We appreciate the introductions by President Vanya Quiñones and Interim Provost Andrew Lawson, as well as the keynote presentation by Dr. Alejo José G. Sison and lively discussion by CSUMB faculty Laura Otero and Jill Hosmer-Jolley, and students Sofie Santucci and Luke Moore. If you missed it, or would like to revisit the event, go to csumb.edu/ethics to view the webinar recording.

The end of the semester can be stressful, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed with finishing up group projects, preparing for finals, and planning for what comes next, whether that's next term’s classes, a summer job/internship, or in the case of our seniors, graduation and stepping into a career path. Whatever the case, I encourage you to slow down and enjoy this time as much as possible. And if you need help, reach out to a trusted College of Business faculty member or staff, contact the Business Department (business@csumb.edu), or find resources at CSUMB’s Health and Wellness Services. We’re here to support you and help you finish strong!

Last week's College of Business Showcase was a wonderful event celebrating all graduating seniors with Kukui beads and a festive evening. We recognized impactful leaders in our community, as well as outstanding students from each program. I'm looking forward to the Business Capstone Festival tomorrow and this weekend's commencement ceremony. Here’s to a successful and memorable wrap-up of the academic year!

Warm Regards,

Dr. Marylou Shockley, Ph.D.
