ULO Scholars Topic Descriptions

ULO Topic Description
ULO1-Oral Communication (GE A1) Instructors who are either teaching A1 courses or intend to teach them in the near future will collaborate on best practices for teaching speaking and listening skills as well as engage in norming practices for the upcoming OC assessment of Area A1 courses. The community will also spend time aligning the core A1 assignments to the OC assignment guide. Participants do not have to commit to being an Assessment Scholar during the winter assessment cycle but it would be preferable.
ULO1-Written Communication (GE A2) Building on our investigation of information literacy and diverse epistemologies in the fall, we want to focus this spring on exploring how practices supporting equity show up in A2 courses around the university. We plan to focus on instructional materials in the spring and student work in the summer.
ULO1-Critical Thinking        (GE A3) As a result of our summer assessment work, we have elected to develop a campus-wide survey with the intent of assessing whether and how it may be possible to establish a widely shared, and widely used common framework for teaching critical thinking at CSUMB. The survey includes elements from several existing critical thinking frameworks and asks respondents to use a Likert scale to rank the importance of each element. It also asks faculty to compare four complete models of critical thinking against each other and to rank their acceptability as a possible common framework for CSUMB. We are considering whether to develop task-based scenarios as a means to better understand respondents’ responses to and rankings of, different elements of critical thinking. We will have the survey out to CSUMB faculty by mid-October and have the results and accompanying unifying framework out to the campus in Spring of 2020. Developing a "common elements of critical thinking" survey for campus-wide implementation fall '20.
ULO1-Information Literacy

Using the SBS program as a model, we will investigate how students' synthesis of information from sources evolves throughout the two-semester capstone process. We will develop a rubric for assessing synthesis in a more granular way than the existing information literacy rubric and consider ways to support students in their development of this skill.

ULO1-Information Literacy (Capstone) This co-op will focus on teaching synthesis of information from sources. Synthesizing information is a skill employers look for in college graduates and often find lacking (Head et al., 2013). Co-op participants will share teaching strategies and compile resources to share with other faculty.
ULO1-Quantitative Reasoning

Building on our assessment of courses taken after "B4" we will explore ways to support assessment of QR across the entirety of a program and the university curriculum, such as in GE UD B. We will spend time understanding more deeply how to identify where QR occurs within our curriculum and develop reasonable and approachable assessment options for programs.

ULO2-Personal, Professional, and Social Responsibility ULO2 Scholars will be working on developing the Rubric Guide and beginning to develop an Assignment Guide. We will also be working on threshold concepts, and other supports to assessing this complex, but so very important set of ideas related to Personal, Professional and Social Responsibility. Further development of Rubric, Rubric Guide, Threshold Concepts, and Assignment Guide.
ULO3-Integrative Knowledge ULO3 Scholars will continue to work on the Recommendations and Next Steps identified from the Summer 2019 Assessment Project. Tasks include: developing IK Flyers to disseminate across campus, develop example assignments for rubric guide prompts, explain level differences on IK rubric, develop IK rubric version specific to 100/200 level courses, create IK Google Survey to align with assignment guide and curricular prompts & to determine where IK is happening in programs
