What is the Sustainable Graduation Pledge
The Sustainable Graduation Pledge is part of global campaign that motivates and encourages graduating students to live a environmentally and socially conscious life. Taking the pledge means that you are willing to improve upon sustainable practices in your life, community, and work.
Why Take the Pledge?
CSU Monterey Bay is dedicated to encouraging its students and alumni to be active sustainability leaders in their local communities, careers and personal lives. Graduation is an achievement to celebrate as a degree carries a responsibility and privilege for action. We encourage you to embrace that responsibility by committing to embed sustainability into your post-grad journey - whatever it may mean to you. Taking the Sustainable Graduation pledge means that you are a part of transforming a society that is equitable for all people and for planet.
Special Opportunity for 2021 Graduates
The graduation yard sign that you receive is made of "flag material" that can be reused. Students are encouraged to decorate their flags by adding their name, picture, and possibly a quote. You can mail your flag back to campus, to be weaved into a Campus COVID Quilt. The quilt will be displayed, honoring all the students who graduated during COVID. More information on this coming soon.
Suggestions for Sustainable Celebration
The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Sustainability strongly encourages the prohibition of balloons at graduation. In addition to the ecological damage they cause, the Associated Students has restricted balloon use at all AS events. Even though graduation is not an AS event, we believe you should show solidarity to your student body by not using balloons.
Additionally, balloons prove to be a safety hazard. Balloons can potentially hit powerlines: causing power outages and fires.
Alternatives to balloons
- Paper umbrellas
- Real Flower Lei
Glitter and confetti is a very popular and fun celebratory item; however, they are extremely bad for the environment, because it is made from plastic and very small. There are many alternatives to glitter and confetti that have the same effect - and some actually benefit Earth!
Alternatives to Glitter and Confetti
- Biodegradable confetti
- Plant seed confetti
- Leaf and flower confetti
- Flower petals
- Lavender confetti
Instead of recycling your graduation swag box, it can be upcycled into a useable item! Some ideas that this memorable item can be turned into are:
- Jewelry box
- DIY indoor mail station
- Photo frames
- String wrapped storage box
- Gift Tags
- Hanging box lantern
- Garbage bin
As we draw closer to graduation, stay turned for videos from the CSUMB Makerspace which will provide fun projects for graduation-celebration themed activities. Projects will use items from the Grad Swag Box, Maker Kit and/or items found around home.
- Paper origami "balloons" or garlands
- Macramé cord garlands or leis
- Macramé cord car dashboard or mirror decorations
- Signs/congratulatory notes
