Housing accommodations based on medical, psychological or other disability related needs are handled by Student Housing & Residential Life.
SDR collaborates with Student Housing & Residential Life to arrange for a student’s disability related needs to be addressed.
Students with disabilities who may require special accommodations must submit a special petition letter to Student Housing & Residential Life as well as well as a copy of the petition to Student Disability Resources (SDR).
Housing at CSUMB can be heavily impacted. Some accommodations may take six months to implement. Plan ahead in order for requests for specific housing assignments to be fully considered.
Students should contact SDR as soon as possible if they experience to any problems in the obtaining of housing accommodations.
Some of the housing facilities have been modified to provide restroom accessibility features such as grab bars and roll in showers/ shower seats for students with physical disabilities. Visual alarms for deaf/hard of hearing students are also installed in some areas.
Any additional facility modifications should be requested through Housing and Residential Life and authorized by SDR.
Students who need personal care attendants must plan to recruit, hire, and manage their care. CSUMB does not provide attendant or personal care.
Contact SDR to clarify procedures for allowing personal attendants in the campus housing and for the permission to be issued a key to a student’s room.
In-home supportive services (IHSS) in Monterey County
The Monterey County Department of Social Services may be able to assist students with disabilities through a state-wide program. Students on SSI may expedite eligibility.
The In-home Supportive Services program assists low-income elderly and disabled adults and children to remain safely in their own homes. The program pays the wages for a helper (provider) to come into the home to do housekeeping, laundry and personal care, shopping for groceries and other essentials, meal preparation and clean up and medical transportation. IHSS staff work closely with the staff of the Public Authority for In-Home Supportive Services to assist clients to find a provider.
For more information, visit the Monterey County Department of Social Services site.
