Class of 2017
Upon completing her BS in Marine Biology, Emily Hess moved to Catalina Island off the coast of LA to work for the Catalina Island Marine Institute. In her five years there she enhanced her passion for science education and environmental stewardship, particularly for marine ecosystems. In between teaching marine science labs, snorkels, kayak tours, and ecology hikes, Emily created artistic teaching tools for the Toyon facility, which sparked an interest in science illustration. She left Catalina Island to attend the science illustration graduate program at California State University Monterey Bay, where she graduated in June of 2017. The summer of 2017 Emily is interning at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove creating educational outreach materials and infographics, and is looking forward to utilizing her skillset, contributing to the scientific community in a multifaceted way in the future.
