We in the CSUMB community extend our deepest sympathies to all who were harmed in the tragic shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. We stand in solidarity with the Muslim members of our community and the broader Muslim community during this tragic time. We also condemn the intolerance and hatred that motivated this senseless act. In our community we value and embrace all faiths knowing that their presence enriches our lives and enhances our commitment to be a tolerant, accepting and respectful university.
As we remember and mourn those who lost their lives or were harmed in the senseless violence in New Zealand, we should redouble our commitment to respect and value each other no matter our faith and resoundingly reject hatred and bigotry wherever it exists. When we make that commitment, we embody what Dr. King meant when he declared: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
