Accomplishments
Habitat Stewardship Project, Monterey Bay (HSPMB) could not do what we do without the support of dedicated volunteers, students, and staff who make the education, outreach, and restoration activities possible!
Numbers can't measure how the HSPMB "family" helped to inspire a child to recycle, a gardener to plant native plants at their home, or give a scrub jay a a place to live. However, they do help us to see how people coming together with a common cause can have a huge impact!
2015-2016 restoration season achivements
1,058 volunteers at community events. Volunteers reduced trash pollution in our parks and creeks, planted native plants to increase biodiversity and restore habitat for wildlife, removed invasive plants, sampled water, counted birds and had a great time making a positive impact on our community.
25,000 native plants propagated by HSPMB volunteers, students and staff.
12,499 plants planted by community, high school, and student volunteers.
2,662 K- 12 students learned about habitat restoration and watershed health, and even became volunteers themselves while participating in hands-on restoration! Many students also participated in field trips at restoration sites in Seaside, Marina, and Salinas where they learned about local eco-systems and the importance of serving their local communities.
Prevented 3,000 pounds of trash from reaching the ocean. Volunteers helped pick up: plastic bags, food containers, mattresses, tires, shopping carts, discarded Christmas trees, building materials, cigarette butts, and bottles. This hard work has helped to make local parks cleaner and safer places for families and wildlife, has helped to protect the creeks that flow to the Monterey Bay, and prevented ocean pollution.
40 service learning students from CSUMB dedicated at least 30 hours of service to assisting with Green Thumb volunteers in greenhouse, helping with education programs, and community events.
