The purpose of Health and Wellness Services’ Health Promotion and Education program is to encourage and enhance practices of wellness among members of the CSUMB community.
Our goals are to:
- Increase knowledge and awareness of issues related to personal wellness, including mental health, suicide prevention, sexual assault prevention, nutrition, eating disorders, reproductive health, and the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
- Facilitate the adoption and maintenance of positive health behaviors and wellness practices.
- Offer health education programs, information, and materials to students, and serve as a resource for staff and faculty.
- Promote awareness of Campus Health Center services and programs.
- Provide practical experience for peer educators, interns, and other students interested in pursuing health-related careers.
The Health Promotion and Education staff includes experienced health professionals and trained, certified student peer educators. We provide presentations and trainings for students, campus-wide health promotion activities, health education materials, and referrals for campus and community resources.

Otter Be Well (OBW) is a semester long program designed to help students improve their mental and physical wellbeing through a self-selected physical activity program. Taking the first step toward a physically active lifestyle can be an overwhelming experience, especially when attempted alone. We understand this, which is why we use an exercise buddy system. All exercise buddies or “peer assistants” are highly trained and knowledgeable in principles of physical activity and are flexible to meet the needs of a student's busy schedule. Unlike personal trainers, our peer assistants are not there to tell the student what they should and should not do. They are there to support the student's choices and provide guidance when needed by being a reliable activity partner. Whether the student enjoys walks to the beach, biking around Fort Ord,or going to the rec center, the peer assistant will be there to support the student in the ways they would like to be physically active.
The program is free for students identified as qualifying by their counselor in the Personal Growth and Counseling Center (PGCC). If you are interested in being part of the program, ask your counselor for more information.
OBW is modeled after the highly successful WellCat Fit program at Chico State.
CSUMB’s Health Promotion & Education Program has been awarded a $5000 grant to assist students in recovery from substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.
The grant was awarded through Transforming Youth Recovery (TYR), a nonprofit organization founded in 2013. TYR examines the community, educational and peer networks that influence youth development and achievement, and providing novel approaches to expanding family and school-based prevention, intervention and recovery support services.
The grant will provide CSUMB with early-stage seed funding to assist us in better meeting the needs of students in recovery on our campus.
The grant also will support the creation of an online map of community recovery assets intended to facilitate both local and nation-wide networks of collaboration among collegiate recovery practitioners, students, and community members.
Caroline Haskell, Founding Director of Health & Wellness Services, states: “The idea is to connect the university community, particularly our students, to available resources and each other.”
The ultimate goal of this project is to create a sustainable collegiate recovery program on campus that provides a safe, supportive, and fun environment for students in recovery from substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.
