TRiO Student Support Services Program

TRiO Student Support Services provides supplemental tutoring, advising, counseling, remediation and other support services to first generation low-income college students. The aim of the program is to increase college retention rates and graduation among college students.

What Is A Trio Program?

TRIO programs were established by the U.S. Department of Education and began with only three (hence the name trio) programs over 25 years ago. However, they have grown to include: Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, Ronald McNair Programs, Equal Opportunity Centers, and Veteran's Upward Bound. All TRIO programs have the same goal - to make a college education more attainable to those eligible and to increase the likelihood of a student's success of completing their college education.

Who Participates?

Each year the SSS program serves 160 qualified students in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education's guidelines. Therefore, all participants must meet the qualifying criteria of either being first generation, low income, and/or having a *documented physical or learning disability. Students must complete a program application in order to determine their eligibility. Applications are currently available in Building 47/First Floor at the Support Programs Office.

What Are The Goals Of The Program?

The goals of the program are to assist students to achieve their maximum academic potential, experience social and cultural activities, and assist students in creating a "plan" for their futures after graduating from CSUMB. SSS participants will create a sense of community to encourage and motivate each other along the way on their journey towards graduation and their professional careers.

*NOTE: Students with disabilities should contact the intake counselor at the Student Disability Resources for disability verification and accommodation services. Building 47, (831) 582-3672
