Department of Social Work

Preparing compassionate professionals committed to equity, advocacy and community service.

Building Justice Through Social Work

The Department of Social Work at CSUMB develops students as leaders in advancing social, economic, and environmental justice. Our programs emphasize work with Latinx communities, Indigenous populations, and other historically underserved groups, integrating classroom learning with applied practice.

“CSUMB’s social work program is rigorous, but the faculty are empathetic and supportive. Our small classes have built a real community. You meet amazing people, and you have the accessibility to truly know your professors. That’s something you don’t find everywhere.”

— Karla Ramirez

Where Learning Meets Leadership

Social work education at CSUMB extends far beyond lectures and textbooks. Students gain professional experience through practicum placements in regional organizations and develop their voice as advocates through student leadership opportunities. Together, these experiences prepare graduates to enter the profession with confidence, connections, and a strong sense of purpose.

Practicum and Community Partnerships

Field education is central to social work at CSUMB. Students complete practicum placements in schools, nonprofits, hospitals, and government agencies, working under professional supervision while serving diverse communities. Strong partnerships across the region ensure that practicum opportunities align with student goals and community needs.

Student Leadership and Community

The department fosters connection and leadership beyond the classroom. The Master of Social Work Student Association (MSWSA) provides opportunities for professional networking, peer support, and advocacy. Combined with close faculty mentorship and small class sizes, students join a department rooted in collaboration and committed to “growing our own” professionals for the Central Coast and beyond.
