Below are the main elements of the Action Thesis proposal.  Although your research methods professor may add other elements, these are the main elements that all students are required to develop, in as much detail as you can.

Action Thesis Proposal for M.A. Degree in Education

Name: ______________________________________________________________________

Address: ____________________________________________________________________

Thesis Advisor: _______________________________________________________________

Date submitted to MA Faculty: ___________     Date approved by MA Faculty: ____________

* Are human Subjects involved in this study: YES________ NO _________

* If human subjects are expected to participate in your study, submit a completed Human Subjects Research Application with this proposal. Once your thesis proposal has been approved, you will submit the Human Subjects Research Application to the CSUMB Grants and Contracts Office.

1. The Title

Give the tentative title of your action thesis project. The problem cannot change; the title may. Make sure that your title is not trivial but something that is manageable within the amount of time you have to conduct your inquiry.

2. The Goal and Purpose

Describe the emergence of the concern your action thesis addresses, the social injustices you are interested in addressing and the community of practice that you are working with. What are you trying to accomplish through this thesis?  What would you like to see happen as a result of your work?  What kind of action do you anticipate the thesis leading to?

3. Review of the related literature

Submit a three page discussion summarizing the literature you are reading and relying on for your action thesis.  Include all of the references you anticipate using at the end of the proposal (not in the middle). Submit a draft of your literature review to your advisor.

4. Why you chose the plan of action you propose

Exactly what do you propose to do?  Describe the collaborative process used to develop your plan for action.  Critically evaluate possible forms of action and desired outcomes, and how they contribute to social justice.  In other words, if you chose to gather data, why? If you chose to create a program, why?

5.  Procedures in detail

If you are doing a study, exactly what is your research design?  What data collection procedures will you use?  How will you analyze the data? Be as specific as you can and include any questionnaires or instruments you are using.  If you are creating a project, what are all of the steps you plan to go through to design it?  Construct it?  Try it out?  The MA in Education faculty do not formally approve thesis proposals until your procedures are clear enough that we know exactly what you plan to do.  You may need to work with your advisor on this section.  You will also need to have this clearly spelled out for Human Subjects review; we recommend using the same information in both this proposal and the Human Subjects application.

6.  Your timeline

What is your anticipated timeline for completing each section or stage of your action thesis?
