Bilingual Communicator: Students will communicate with native speakers of a language other than English.

Assessment Process, Criteria, and Standard;

Students must have documentation that they have achieved competence in a language other than English, through the equivalent of fourth university semester level, in speakingm listening, reading, and writing. For information on what this means, refer to the CSUMB Language University Learning Requirement

For Category One languages such as Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese the expected level of proficiency is ACTFL Intermediate-mid level;
For Category Four languages such as Japanese, Chinese and Korean, the expected level of proficiency is the ACTFL Intermediate-low level;

Comptence can be demonstrated through a variety of means, including: 

  • having completed BCLAD certification; 
  • having fourth semester of college-level language work on a transcript with grade "C" or better;
  • completing HILT (High Intensity Language Training) through the Intermediate II level;
  • assessment through World Languages and Cultures (register for ASMT, section for the appropriate language); 
  • having completed at least junior-level university coursework in a language other than English;
  • Advanced Placement (AP) score or 4 or 5 in a language other than English.
